Romy Binstein | Serenity | From “Moments of Quiet” | colored pencil on canvas | 2022 | 10” x 6”

From the artist: Serenity is the first of four works in my series, “Moments of Quiet.” The work uses water to convey the feelings experienced during a moment in life. The silence that follows sinking your head underwater illustrates the relieving moments unbothered by deadlines, responsibilities, and commitments. Produced only with shades of blue exemplifies the coherence in the self-revitalizing feeling.

2022 | 11” x 14”.

From the artist: Depicting the Virgin Mary with an aura of darkness, I attempt to reject my culture’s conventional values that generalize women as a symbol of purity. Introduced by European colonizers as a symbol of femininity, The Virgin Mary exposes patriarchal undertones that prize virginal purity rather than Mary’s importance and power. However, once that conformity is rejected, Mary becomes autonomous over her own image, no longer just a mother to a son. Ultimately, it is up to you in your interpretation.

Francesca Ross | Toxic Contamination | Bleach on photograph | 2022, 18” x 12” | Bath, England

From the artist: The use of bleaching and the addition of overlaying words obscure the presentation of the photograph, emphasizing the likely future we face and our contribution toward it. Leaving vehicles and industrial buildings unbleached adds to the difficulty for you to distance yourself from acknowledging your role in contributing. This work is meant to disturb you, to leave a lasting presence in your mind.

Romy Binstein | A Still Summer | From “Moments of Quiet” | Acrylic, watercolor, and colored pencil on poster paper | 2022 | 22” x 28”

From the artist: The third piece in my four-part series, “Moments of Quiet,” A Still Summer shares the little moment of still silence that allows us to recharge in a contemporary fast-paced life. The painting represents a slow breath through the imperfect lines and blended edges while you take in your surroundings to feel content in the little flashes of solitude.

From the artist: “It’s me trying to illustrate how I go from one idea to the next. When I create art I tend to show a part of myself that I don’t otherwise show in everyday life”

From the artist: Cracks of Apollo and Solemn, taken in the south of Turkey, capture a glimpse into ancient Greece. Cracks of Apollo presents a close-up shot of a column with cracks that contrasts with the beautiful carvings; since it's from a temple dedicated to Apollo, I wanted to include that in the title while also evoking a sense of the passing of time. I am interested in the play of light and shadow, so I edit my photos in black and white to enhance that contrast. Solemn is from another ancient Greek site that Persian attacks and earthquakes had destroyed; the remains left behind are laid out in the ground in an open field. Even though they are small bits of remnants, you can still feel the glorious past that they once belonged to. Hence the title "Solemn" best explains my emotions experienced being there.
